JON ARNOLD INTERVIEWS eCOMM'S LEE DRYBURGH

Ecomm2008logo_small Jon Arnold spent some time this week with eComm 2008 chair and organizer Lee Dryburgh to talk about “where voice is going.” With eComm taking place March 12-14, this is a good opportunity to get a preview of some of the discussion you can expect there. Read/listen to Jon’s interview with Lee in this IP Convergence TV post.

IPCTV uses Odiogo’s text-to-speech system, which, as good as it is, doesn’t quite capture Lee’s charming Scottish brogue. For that, you’ll just have to go to eComm!

JUNCTION NETWORKS OPENS “INBOUND BRIDGE” TO ONSIP HOSTED PBX

Jn_logo1 Bridging application lets hosting customers use third-party providers of DID numbers for best LD price in desired footprint

NEW YORK–Feb. 28, 2008Junction Networks, host provider of the onSIP PBX service, has launched Inbound Bridge, an accessory service that ties in third-party providers of international and domestic DID numbers. Inbound Bridge saves money for Junction Networks’ business customers by allowing them to find the best per-minute price for inbound VoIP calling minutes in their chosen geographic regions. These customers connect that to the onSIP PBX platform, which offers industry-leading price and flexibility in hosted PBX, auto attendant, voice mail and other voice services.

Inbound Bridge solves a vexing problem for companies that want local numbers and 800 numbers in foreign countries or specific domestic regions—numbers typically rented from other VoIP network providers. Many of these providers simply deliver calls from one end point to the other; they don’t implement the key function of the SIP VoIP signaling protocol that allows callers to navigate phone menus, transfer calls, put callers on hold and trigger other events. Without this function (specified in the IETF’s RFC 3515), inbound callers are disconnected when they “press 1 for sales,” or try to transfer to extension numbers for specific people.

Junction Networks’ Inbound Bridge performs the missing SIP function, maintaining the two-way SIP signaling needed for interactivity after a call is already established. It can therefore pass the entered touch-tone digits to the auto attendant and other PBX applications. It can integrate onSIP with any network vendor having an open SIP implementation (permitting communication with other SIP networks).

“This is a perfect opportunity if you’re a company that wants a toll-free service from Europe or Asia, or you have some other reason to use a third-party phone number provider,” said Rob Wolpov, president, Junction Networks. “But you do want to use our hosted solution, because it works very well, you have company extensions in one or more sites, and you like the price of that.” ($39.95 a month for core voice applications and an unlimited number of SIP extensions, with free calling between them.)

“You can get your toll-free origination from any provider that offers SIP delivery of inbound calls, and just have it go to us through the Inbound Bridge. We charge $1.95 a month per DID, and half a cent a minute to cover our cost of the Bridge. If you can get your toll-free for one or one and a half cents a minute, you wind up paying two cents a minute for toll-free, as opposed to paying almost four cents a minute to Junction Networks.

“That’s completely OK with us,” Wolpov stressed. “Go somewhere else to get your minutes and then come to us for the auto attendant, the ACD queue, the voice mail, all those sorts of applications.”

To date, Junction Networks has tested the Inbound Bridge with international DID provider Voxbone. Other third-party DID providers are to be tested and added in the coming months.

“We’re happy to supply onSIP customers with our core value—locally dialed phone presence in more than 40 countries around the world,” said Rodrigue Ullens, Voxbone CEO. “With our intercontinental voice-only backbone, Junction Networks’ Inbound Bridge and onSIP platform, these enterprises can get the best value in DID numbers and international VoIP transport, plus all the convenience and flexibility of hosted IP PBX.”

IOTUM ‘FREE CONFERENCE CALLS’ ON FACEBOOK GOES GLOBAL

Iotum_20_large Three New Partnerships Extend Reach from North America to The World

OTTAWA–Feb. 26, 2008iotum today announced global availability of its popular FREE Conference Calls application on Facebook under agreements with Internet communications partners Truphone in the U.K., Abbeynet in Italy and MOI Telecom in France.

iotum CEO Alec Saunders said the global expansion of FREE Conference Calls is in response to demand from users of the application launched on Facebook last September. “Now, thanks to our partnership agreements, anyone can join a FREE Conference Call from anywhere in the world.”

“FREE Conference Calls has many standard features not available from other providers,” he said. “We give our users the ability to provide agendas for their calls; moderators can mute or unmute the calls; record a podcast; schedule calls in advance, or provide reminders. Hosts can also queue participants to speak, and we even provide a live ‘writing wall’ for interactive text chat.”

Since launch, Iotum’s FREE Conference Calls service on Facebook has attracted more than 90,000 users. Conference calls have been created to hold public tele-seminars, private meetings, family events, New Year’s Eve countdowns, political discussions and to record multi-person podcasts.

Starting today, users can join an iotum FREE Conference Call using one of three methods:

  1. Direct dial from home, office, or mobile. In the United States, Canada and France, users can dial the conference server directly using an ordinary call and be joined to the FREE Conference Calls.  Iotum intends to roll out more direct-dial countries in the future by recruiting additional partners to service other parts of the world.
  2. VoIP. From anywhere in the world, users can call using their PCs.  All that’s required is an active Internet connection, and clicking on the FREE Conference Calls application icon in Facebook.
  3. Call back. A user can be called back simply by entering into the FREE Conference Calls application on Facebook the phone number where his or her call is to be received.

“Participants don’t have to be on Facebook, but it’s more valuable for them if they are,” Saunders said. “And it’s easy. Facebook users simply install the iotum FREE Conference Calls application—http://apps.facebook.com/freeconference—and invite friends for a group chat.”

Sherman Hu, producer and host of the ShermanLive.com blog, wrote: "As a coach to thousands of business owners about the innovative combination and profitable deployment of blogs, podcasts, video and social media for business, I see the ability to conduct training calls and have anyone outside North America dial in from anywhere in the world at no charge as a priceless benefit. This initiative will have far-reaching impact for my global business."

At Truphone, Platform Director Dean Elwood said: “Truphone already has built a reputation for telephony innovation by providing free mobile-to-mobile calls via the Internet. This tie-up with Iotum fits perfectly with our vision of providing new ways for people to call each other without heed to old world boundaries and pricing structures.”

SIGHTSPEED AND VTEL BRING AFFORDABLE VIDEOCONFERENCING TO THE CONFERENCE ROOM

Vtel_logoSightspeed_logo_large

Low-Cost, No-Hassle Videoconferencing is a Boon for Small & Medium Businesses

BERKELEY, Calif., and AUSTIN, Texas–Feb. 26, 2008SightSpeed Inc., the leading provider of Internet video communications and operator of a fast-growing network of SIP videoconferencing endpoints, and VTEL, a pioneer in group videoconferencing systems, today announced a partnership to provide easy-to-use, low-cost videoconferencing for conference rooms and remote PCs and laptops.

The partnership, created as a way to make this solution readily available to customers, will also enable SightSpeed Business services to be featured in VTEL’s reseller channel.

The immediate result, however, is that it’s now possible for small and medium-sized businesses to have professional videoconferencing quality in their conference rooms and remote offices for a fraction of the cost, set-up time and hassle of traditional business videoconferencing systems. Users can immediately set up multipoint conferences involving as many as four sites and send documents to all sites during the conference, making it ideal for training sessions, sales meetings, production planning and design reviews.

“In the past, bringing remote colleagues together virtually has required a huge investment in conference room equipment and infrastructure,” said VTEL President Richard Ford, “but VTEL’s all-in-one IPanel conferencing room system combined with SightSpeed’s best-in-class online videoconferencing services take the cost—and aggravation—out of videoconferencing. Now, even multipoint conferences are simple and affordable.”

“Through the combination of SightSpeed Business online video services and VTEL’s all-in-one videoconferencing system, small and mid-sized businesses can now afford a fully functional conferencing solution operating on the public Internet,” said SightSpeed CEO Peter Csathy. “And these businesses also gain the benefit of full access to SightSpeed’s highly scalable and robust SIP architecture, providing them with greater interoperability and flexibility.”

The VTEL IPanel seamlessly blends videoconferencing, computing and HDTV viewing into one integrated system. The system features an Olevia 32-inch LCD high-definition TV, a full pan-tilt-zoom camera, full-duplex audio and an integrated PC. The IPanel is all a company needs in its conference room to conduct local meetings or to conference with remote sites.

Among the benefits of the new service are:
• VTEL all-in-one conference room system for the complete price of $3,995;
• SightSpeed Business software, supporting multi-party videoconferencing, in-call file sharing, unlimited video calling, and video and voice call recording for a package price of $1,495 for five conference systems (room systems or individual PCs/laptops); and
• Simple-to-use plug-and-play functionality, including the ability to easily invite remote users.

EMERGING COMMUNICATIONS (eCOMM) CONFERENCE 2008 SIGNALS ‘GOLD RUSH’ OF INNOVATION IN GLOBAL TELECOMS

Ecomm2008logo_copy Event at Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif., March 12-14

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.–Feb. 20, 2008—Discussions at the Emerging Communications (eComm) Conference 2008 here March 12-14 may leave the world’s established telecommunications carriers feeling left behind. That’s because conference organizers aim to help unleash a “gold rush” of innovation and democratization in the global telecom industry.

With a growing roster of speakers from among the world’s leading thinkers and innovators in telecoms, eComm2008—dubbed “The Trillion Dollar Industry Rethink”—promises to be an event promoting ideas that plant seeds to revolutionize the industry.

For example, the theme of eComm2008’s premier session, a panel discussion including Google and Skype, is “What will drive wireless innovation?”—leaving no doubt innovators are prospecting for users with wireless applications that go far beyond the artificial boundaries erected by established mobile carriers.

“The wireless market is the world’s largest market and that is accelerating; every second the global population expands by one, and in the same second, 38 wireless devices are sold,” said Lee S. Dryburgh, conference organizer and chair. “The message of eComm2008 is that there is a seismic shift in power and money ahead, and it looks like the end user is coming out the winner. It's the gold rush and the conference signals the gold rush is on.

“Mobile carriers have tightly reined or even hobbled Internet innovation from blossoming on handsets; they’re perceived as a bottleneck,” said Dryburgh. “But many of the applications developers and handset manufacturers speaking at eComm2008 will describe new power they are putting into the hands of users. The carriers’ lock on innovation will be cracked.

“Think about it,” he added. “Already there are three times as many wireless handsets in the world as PCs, and handsets ‘know’ more about users because they are with them all the time.  They ‘know’ users’ locations and relationships, and increasingly they’re becoming the largest hub of users’ communications. There is clearly more potential around handsets than the PC.”

Speakers at eComm will include Rich Miner, group manager, mobile platforms at Google; Jonathan Christensen, general manager, audio and video at Skype; Brough Turner, chief technical officer and senior vice president at NMS Communications; and Christopher Allen, founder of the largest iPhone developer-support community.

Dryburgh noted that eComm2008 continues to attract sponsors and speakers. With the addition of more speakers in the last two weeks, eComm2008 now has three full days of sessions.  Sponsors so far include Voxbone, Ribbit, Six Apart, NMS Communications, IfByPhone, MIR3, Voxeo, Wireless Grids Corporation and VAPPS.

Attendees may register online at http://www.eCommMedia.com, where full details of the conference—including the roster of speakers—are available.

The Advisory Board assisting Dryburgh in selecting content and speakers for eComm includes:
Imran Ali, founding partner in Carbon Imagineering;
Dean Bubley, founder of Disruptive Analysis;
Michel Bauwens, founder of the Foundation for Peer to Peer Alternatives;
Martin Geddes, chief analyst at technology consultancy STL Partners;
Norman Lewis, chief strategy officer at Wireless Grids Corporation;
Sheldon Renan, principal in technology consultancy Vision & Strategy, LLC;
Brough Turner, senior VP, chief technology officer and co-founder of NMS Communications; and
Phil Wolff, CEO of Reef9 Media and managing editor of Skype Journal.

BERKELEY, Calif.–Feb. 13, 2008—SightSpeed, the leading provider of Internet video communications and operator of a fast-growing network of SIP videoconferencing endpoints, is proud to be named to the Software & Information Industry Association’s (SIIA) list of finalists in two separate categories for the trade group’s 23rd Annual Codie Awards. The SIIA nomination is the latest of several tech industry accolades SightSpeed received in 2007 and now 2008.2008_finalist

SIIA, the principal trade association for the software and digital content industry, has chosen SightSpeed 6.0 among five finalists in the “Best Communication Solution” and the “Best Collaboration Solution” categories. The finalists resulted from the first round of SIIA judging late last year by representatives from the software and information industry trade press, mainstream technology writers, analysts, consultants and subject-matter experts. Category winners will be selected in upcoming voting by SIIA members.

“Competition is tough this year and that makes selection as a CODiE Finalist a real achievement,” said Ken Wash, SIIA president. “All the companies on this year’s list should feel justifiably proud of their recognition.”

Established in 1986, the Codie Awards celebrate outstanding achievement and vision in the software, digital information and education technology industries. More information about the SIIA Codie Awards finalists is available at http://www.siia.net/codies/2008/finalists.asp.

“We set the bar high when we launched SightSpeed 6.0 last year, making it better, more flexible and functional, yet easier to use than ever before,” said SightSpeed CEO Peter Csathy. “With 6.0, we made the best quality video experience significantly better and instituted a highly scalable and robust SIP architecture, which has opened up exciting new possibilities of interoperability and flexibility for both our partners and users. We’re honored that the SIIA has recognized these efforts as we continue to build out our services and extend our SIP network.”
